Yesterday was the Thanksgiving holiday, so in and out of cooking a 7.2kg turkey, we decided to ready our garden for winter. Unfortunately, winter has arrived early in Calgary so despite bright and sunny skies, it was about -10 degrees. Cutting back the snap-frozen perennials, I was reminded of lettuce that has frozen in the fridge. Unable to compost due to the compost bin being a frozen solid mass, we satisfied outselves with wrapping the shrubs with burlap (hessin) deemed too delicate to withstand the Calgary winter.
With faces stung rosy with the cold and fingers fumbling within gloves, we had the garden tidied and garden tools stored in the garage for winter all in the time it took to half cook the turkey. This morning, our efforts were rewarded when we woke to a thick blanket of snow.
